Our story — from Socorro chile to Scottsdale tables

Frank and Maria “Lupe” Bernal opened Frank & Lupe’s El Sombrero in Socorro, New Mexico, in 1980. The ambition was modest and serious at once: cook the food of home with enough discipline that strangers became regulars. Red chile, green chile, tortillas, and hospitality were not marketing pillars—they were the daily work.

Arizona chapter

In 1995 the family brought that kitchen to Old Town Scottsdale on Marshall Way. For more than thirty years the room collected painted tiles, chile lights, patio nights, and a reputation for fiery green chile that did not apologize. Sons Teddy and Eddie carried the Arizona operation through growth and hard years. A second Valley location in Ahwatukee operated for a time and later closed. Loss visited the family in 2020; the Scottsdale kitchen continued under stewardship that kept the recipes intact.

Closure, promise, return

When Old Town closed in 2025, the message to guests was not nostalgia alone—it was a promise to reopen. Gainey Ranch is that next chapter: modern Southwest finishes, a bar for conversation, intimate tables, and the same Bernal-rooted plates. Guests who remember Marshall Way should recognize the food. New neighbors should feel invited on the first visit.
